As communities in southern Oregon continue to see the impacts of climate change and the effect that hotter summers and more extreme wildfires have on our jobs, health and quality of life, we are seeing the need to transition even faster to a more local and sustainable economy.
Across Oregon, community groups, city councils, businesses and more are starting conversations about a “Just Transition.” This term has a long history in the labor movement, and more recently has been used in the climate movement.
A just transition commits to a pathway for workers and communities that are currently employed in extractive industries or impacted by climate change to transition their jobs and communities to new and sustainable economies.
Join your neighbors at the Rogue Action Center to learn about the roots of the just transition movement and to engage in community conversations about what a just transition could look like in the Rogue Valley and throughout the state.
Next month, over 250 people across Oregon that represent communities most impacted by climate change will gather together for the first “Oregon Just Transition Assembly” to discuss a just transition for Oregon. It is important that we think through who could be impacted and what opportunities there are for our community in this transition so that our voices in southern Oregon are heard as our state continues making strides for a cleaner, sustainable environment.
We are starting the conversation here in southern Oregon to listen to our community about how we can improve our local economy and environment. We hope you can join us!
